What is Flashfleet?
Flashfleet is Kent State University’s third-generation, technology-based bike share system. Bike-sharing is meant for brief trips around the Kent Campus, the City of Kent, and surrounding areas. Users can pick up a bicycle at one of the stations throughout the Kent Campus, return the bike at one of the other stations, and move about their day.
How do I register?
You must be registered before you can rent a bicycle. You can register in four ways.
1. The nextbike smartphone app (iOS, Android and Windows)
3. Call Customer Service: 330-474-0785
4. At the Kent Student Center or PARTA locations through the Flashfleet kiosks.
Where are the stations?
Stations are conveniently located throughout the Kent Campus within a brief walk of wherever you are. Kiosk and station locations include the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Eastway Center, Van Campen Hall, Tri-Towers, Terrace Hall, Stopher-Johnson, the Kent Student Center and PARTA in downtown Kent.
Do I need a smartphone to use the system?
No. You can also use a landline or station kiosk to register. You can then call customer service, or use the bicycle keypad to enter your phone and PIN.
Costs, Memberships and Fees
Do I need to have a credit or debit card to use the system?
Yes, you must register with a Visa or Mastercard. We are working to create a cash payment option, but for now, you must have a credit or debit card.
What are the fees?
Pay-As-You-Go Riders: Rides are always just $2 per hour plus tax with a $20 maximum charge per day.
Yearly memberships: Available for students at $25, faculty and staff at $35, and $45 for community members which allow up to 3 hours of riding per day, with a $1 charge for each hour over 3 hours.
Rules and Safety
Do I have to wear a helmet?
While Flashfleet does not offer helmets, all riders are STRONGLY encouraged to wear their own helmets. Helmets are available for sale at cost in the Pro Shop of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
How old do I have to be to ride?
Riders must be 18 years or older to register for the system.
What if I get in an accident?
If you are in an accident and someone is injured or there is any type of property damage to the bicycle or other vehicles, call the Kent State police at (330) 672-3070, or call 911. Once you have a police report, you will need the officer's name, the names of all persons involved, and a copy of the report. Please call Customer Service at 330-474-0785 to follow up.
Am I allowed to ride on the sidewalk?
We strongly discourage riders from riding on the sidewalk, and in many cases it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk. If you need to use the sidewalk, please dismount and walk your bicycle. Please ride on the street, obey all traffic signs, and yield to pedestrians. Bike Rentals and Returns
What should I do if the kiosk is defective?
Rental is possible via app, bike computer, or by calling customer service.
What should I do if the station is full?
Lock the bike next to the station with the bike lock and confirm return.
Can I reserve a bike?
No, you can only rent bicycles when you are physically at the station. Although the mobile app will allow you to rent a bike from an offsite location, do not use this as the bike could be retrieved by another individual.
What is the difference between a PIN code and unlock code?
There are two different numbers you need to know. Your PIN number is a 6-digit number that was emailed, or sent via text, when you registered for the program. Keep your PIN safe and do not share it with anyone. If you use the bicycle keypad, you will use your PIN every time you rent a bike. The 4-digit unlock code is only used in conjunction with the bike-mounted cable lock when returning.
Can I use the integrated cable lock when the bike lock is not at the station?
Yes, you may temporarily lock your bike at any bike rack or location by using the integrated bike lock through the front wheel.
What if the bike does not lock or unlock?
Call Customer Service at 330-474-0785. This is the best way to ensure that the bicycle is not rented on your account. Customer service will verify that the bike is locked or unlocked, and can end your rental.
How do I get the app?
The app is called nextbike. There is one app for all nextbike systems worldwide. Download it from Google Play or iTunes. There is no Blackberry version.
Where are the stations?
Stations are located throughout campus and downtown Kent, including the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Eastway Center, Van Campen Hall, Tri-Towers, Terrace Hall, Stopher-Johnson, the Kent Student Center and PARTA in downtown Kent.
What is the length of the operating season?
Flashfleet tries to stay open as long as possible, weather and lack of snow permitting. We typically open around spring break and close around Thanksgiving.
What hours of the day may I rent a bike?
Bikes are available to rent from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
