Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age to participate?
A child must be 3 years old to ride in a canoe with two adults, 11 years old to paddle their own kayak with an adult on the same trip, and 8 years old to float in an inner tube with an adult present.
How much weight can your boats hold?
Our kayaks are rated to 300 pounds. Our canoes can hold 1,150 pounds.
How long are your trips?
It depends on the river speed (flow) and the pace of the paddler but we allow:
Middlebury road is 2 miles and takes 45 minutes – 1 hour
Brust Park is 4.5 miles and takes 1 ½ - 2 hours
Waterworks park is 6.5 miles and takes 2 ½ - 3 hours
Which is easier to paddle, a canoe or a kayak?
It depends on the paddlers, but in general kayaks are easier to control and maneuver.
Do I have to wear a lifejacket?
It is state law that children must be in a lifejacket and it is our policy that all participants wear a life jacket while on the river.
Can I bring my dog?
It depends. We don’t allow dogs on mixed trips. If your party books an entire trip (all 13 spots) and you want to bring a friendly dog sure. We ask that you pick up after your dog and that you are familiar with your dog on and near water. This isn’t the time to try out something new.
How do we know where to get out?
All boats have a map inside with photographs of what the takeout for each trip looks like. We also review this with paddlers before each trip and include our phone number on the map in your boat. Additionally, our staff should be near the takeout waiting as well.
How many people can be in a boat?
Kayaks only hold one person. Children cannot sit in your lap. Canoes can hold three adults at most or two small kids. Know that more than two paddlers changes the balance point and may tip easier.
Can I bring food or drinks?
Yes, but we ask that you not bring glass. Also there is absolutely no alcohol on our trips. We also sell snacks and water at our start point.
Should I bring a phone?
Yes. At least one person in every party should bring a phone and leave it on. This way if we need to contact you due to weather or emergency. We provide dry boxes for phones. Unfortunately, the larger phones, such as iPhone 6 plus, do not fit.
Do we still go if it is raining?
We are open and allow paddling rain or shine. We will call and cancel trips if weather or other environmental conditions deem it necessary to close.
What should I wear?
Paddling is a wet sport. You may stay completely dry, but prepare to get wet. Quick drying, synthetic clothes are best. Shoes that are secure or sandals with a heel strap are recommended. We don’t recommend flip flops that can come off easily in the water.
What about groups larger than 13?
If your group is larger than 13 individuals call 330-672-2802 to speak with the livery manager about custom trips and dates.
Do I have to make a reservation?
Reservations are not required but in our busy season we will completely fill up. Walk ups can join any trip time if there is room on that trip. Inner tubes are walk up only.
How do I book and pay for my trip?
Since you are on our page you can click the 'book now' button to reserve and pay for your trip. We require payment at the time of booking. We have waivers on site, but you can also print out and sign waivers ahead of time on our website as well.
