Q. I have scheduled for Destination Kent and will need to attend during the program. Will I still be able to attend?

A. Yes, students who are selected to participate in the Academic S.T.A.R.S. program will attend Destination Kent State as a group on a specific date. Students will receive more information once they are selected into the Academic S.T.A.R.S. program.

Q. I already have post secondary credit for English. Can I still participate?
  1. Unfortantely, students who have already received credit for an English or College Writing I course are not eligible to participate in the Academic S.T.A.R.S. Program.
Q. I am unable to attend the Interview on April.22th, is there another time I can schedule to participate in the interview?

A. Unfortunately, we cannot make alternative arrangements given the nature of the interview sessions. 

Q. When will I move into my Residence Hall?

A. Students will move into the residence halls on Sunday, June 11th. Students who are selected for program participation will receive information about move-in and the residential location once selected to participate in the program. 

Q. Will I be able to go home on the weekends?

A. Students are allowed ONE (1) home visitation during the July 4th holiday.

Q. Is there a charge for the program?

A. Yes. Students are only responsible for their program fee which ranges up to $100.00. Other than the program fee, the Student Multicultural Center covers the  academic expenses associated with one’s participation in the program (i.e.., Housing, Meals, Tuition, and Books). Families will pay the program fees and  traveling costs to Kent State University for the on-campus interview, move-in orientation and at the end of the program when students move-out. 

Q. How many students will be selected and what is the criteria?
  1. Traditionally, twenty-five students are selected for program participation. In terms of program selection, the following is taken into consideration:
    • The Application: Essay, High School Transcript and Recommendations
    • The Interview 
Q. What will the interview consist of?

The interview process consists of three components:

  • Overview of the Program
  • Panel discussion with past Academic STARS students to discuss their experiences in the program
  • Interview component with student and parent/guardian

The interview allows the interviewers (Kent State University Faculty and Staff) to obtain more specific information about the prospective student’s qualities and aspirations, to ensure they are in alignment with the program outcomes. 


Q. When does the program begin?

A. The Academic STARS program begins on Sunday June 11th, 2017.
