Since I was young, I’ve always known Kent State was where I wanted to go to school. My dad has worked at Kent State for years, and living nearby, I was very familiar with the campus.
My name is Josh Bordonaro, and I’m a senior business management major graduating in May 2025. I’ve found that being a student here has opened doors and opportunities beyond anything I’d imagined.
One of the best things about Kent State is its focus on helping students prepare for life after college.
I knew that with my career I wanted to do something that made a difference in our communities, and I can say that Kent State played a huge role in fitting that desire. My journey really took off during a career fair hosted by the university. I was initially unsure about attending, but my professional development professor, Wendy Holliday, insisted that I go, and I’m so grateful for that push. It was there that I connected with the recruiter from Northwestern Mutual Canton, which led to an internship that will completely shape the rest of my career.

The Northwestern Mutual internship opportunity has allowed me to grow and excel in ways I didn’t think possible. The internship has taken me out of my shell and built confidence, public speaking skills and knowledge that I would not have gotten anywhere else. Over the past 12 months, I’ve worked hard and am proud to say that I’m currently ranked in the top 20 in the country among interns in my field. I received my full-time job offer as a sophomore, which made me incredibly confident and excited for what was to come. None of this would have been possible had Kent State’s career support not been there, or had my professor not cared enough to encourage me to go.
Kent State isn’t just a university; it’s a community of people who genuinely want to see you succeed.
From professors who go out of their way to guide you, to classmates who are excited to learn, the campus environment encourages growth and connection. Having supportive mentors has been key to my success, and Kent State has no shortage of people who will go above and beyond to help you achieve your goals.
In addition to career fairs, there are countless opportunities to build relationships and develop professionally. Clubs, student organizations and other activities on campus allow you to make connections and friendships that last beyond your years in school.
Kent State truly has something for everyone, and it creates an environment where students can grow both academically and personally.
Some of my favorite memories from Kent State are centered around the Honors College. Starting with the Freshman Honors Colloquium courses, which are a great way to explore different topics over real-life subjects while making great friends along the way. The colloquium courses help bring you out of your shell while making you a better writer, reader, debater, and a better student overall. The Honors College also goes out of its way with Cookies and Registration, peer to peer mentors, and other great events. Lastly, the honors college advisors are deeply devoted to student success improving not only your honors experience but the whole Kent experience as well. I’d recommend the Honors College to all who can be involved.

If you’re considering Kent State, here are three pieces of advice that have made all the difference for me.
One, embrace guidance and mentorship. Looking back, my professor’s encouragement to attend the career fair was pivotal for my career and life. I’d encourage you to stay open to guidance from your professors. They see your potential, sometimes even before you do, and are more than willing to help you find ways to make the most of it. There is a reason they are professors, so use their knowledge to help you.
Two, make use of the university resources. Kent State is full of professional resources such as career fairs, networking events, tutoring centers, career services and more. Take advantage of these early! Be willing to put yourself out there in those situations that may make you uncomfortable, and you may just find an opportunity that changes your path for the better.
Lastly, challenge yourself to grow. My experience at Northwestern Mutual has taught me that growth happens when we’re outside our comfort zones. Kent State is the perfect place to challenge yourself. Think about your personal and professional goals, then start to take action now to get there. Discomfort leads to the greatest successes.
Kent State has been more than just a university for me; it’s been the starting point of my career and the foundation of my professional journey. From the strong support network to the endless opportunities for growth, I’ve felt prepared for every challenge that’s come my way.
If you’re considering Kent State, I strongly encourage you to take that leap. This is a place where you can thrive, build lasting connections and set yourself up for a successful future. The opportunities are here waiting for you, just as they were for me. All it takes is a willingness to jump in and make the most of what Kent State and its community have to offer.
