My name is Nicholas Baird, and I’m currently studying mechatronics engineering. I graduate in spring 2025.

One of the biggest reasons I chose Kent State University to pursue my degree is because it’s right in my hometown. Growing up here, I was familiar with the campus, the community and the resources available, so staying local made a lot of sense for me. Not only did it allow me to stay close to my family and support system, but it also gave me the chance to attend a university that’s well-regarded for its engineering programs.
Kent State’s engineering programs are ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering) accredited, which was a big factor in my decision. ABET accreditation is sign that the education you receive meets the standards necessary for the profession. This gave me confidence that I’d be receiving an education that would prepare me well for a career in engineering.
The program's hands-on learning opportunities and real-world applications, like the research projects I’m involved in, set it apart from other schools I considered.
Another key reason for choosing Kent State was its affordability. College can be a significant investment, and having the option to attend a university with a strong reputation at a lower cost was a major benefit. By staying local, I’m able to manage expenses while still receiving the same level of education I would at a higher-cost institution.
One of the most impactful experiences for me has been participating in the SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) program. This program has allowed me to dive into hands-on research, working alongside experienced faculty on research projects that have important societal impacts. The SURE program gave me the opportunity to take my learning beyond the classroom and apply it in a real-world setting. It’s one thing to study theory but getting the chance to work on research that could have a real impact was an invaluable experience.
I also got the chance to work at the Office of Student Research. This office serves as a hub for students looking to get involved in research, offering support, resources and guidance to make the most out of these opportunities. Being part of this office has also allowed me to help other students get started on their own research paths. It’s rewarding to be in a position where I can share what I’ve learned and help others succeed.
The faculty here is very helpful and driven to make sure you succeed. From day one, they’ve been incredibly supportive and approachable.
Professors at Kent State don’t just lecture and leave; they take the time to get to know their students and offer guidance both academically and professionally.
My professors in the engineering department have been instrumental in helping me navigate complex topics and pushing me to think critically. Their doors are always open, whether it’s for discussing course material or talking about future career opportunities.

If I had to give advice to a high school senior considering Kent State, I’d say go for it. The university isn’t just about lectures and exams; it’s about hands-on experience and getting involved in projects that matter.
Whether you’re into engineering, art, business or any other field, you’ll find a place where you can thrive.
There’s a club or organization for just about everything, from academic societies to social groups and community service. The key is to dive in and make the most of the opportunities that come your way.
So, to any high school student wondering if Kent State is the right place for them, I’d say this: If you want to be challenged, supported and inspired, Kent State is a great choice. You’ll have the chance to learn from experts in your field, work on meaningful projects and, most importantly, find your place in a community that’s dedicated to helping you succeed.
