An Unexpected Interview
Our Story
I met my husband at the Institute of African American Affairs (IAAA), now known as Oscar Ritchie Hall. I was the editor of a journal we were publishing in our English class taught by Hulda Smith. I had scheduled an interview with the Black United Student's president for an article about the organization to include in the journal. However, the president did not show up. I was sitting in the hall way looking very lost and this guy came up and asked if he could help me. I told him my dilemma and he said well don't worry you can interview me I am the Black United Student (BUS) President. So I interviewed Duane Cox and now the rest is history. Since then it has been one great adventure after another with Duane and he continues to be my knight in shining armor. We will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary this August!
The Proposal and Marriage
I graduated in May 1978 and we were married August 1978, beginning our great adventures.
Staying Connected to Kent State Today
We stay connected by visiting the university at least once a year during Homecoming and through our friends at Oscar Ritchie, Professor Mwatabu Okantah. Our son, Matthew, attended the university and served as Bus president. Also,our goddaughter Christina Crawford is a recent graduate. We always encourage young people to attend Kent State. We have already began the process with our grandchildren Joshua 6 years old and Noah 4 years old.
