Welcome
The School of Art at Kent State University was established around 1940 and maintains a tradition of excellence in visual arts education, creation, scholarship and leadership.
Its undergraduate and graduate programs in the visual arts offer a range of directions and opportunities in the fields of art education, art history, and a comprehensive array of studio disciplines including painting, drawing, print media and photography, sculpture and expanded media, ceramics, glass, jewelry/metals/enameling, and textiles. We offer the only MFA program in northeast Ohio. Kent State University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
Our caring, distinguished faculty work to support students' goals through encouragement of risk- taking, questioning and critical thinking. We welcome students who are searching for the perfect, nurturing environment to develop their skills. In addition to the guidance from our well-respected faculty and graduate assistants from our highly-recognized graduate program, our students benefit from frequent studio visits and lectures by well-respected, established artists in both areas of fine arts and crafts.
The school provides ample opportunities to empower students to attain the highest level of vision in their craft and scholarly endeavors. Students are provided with few boundaries but many challenges so as to actively engage and prepare them for an enriching life in the arts. Multiple galleries spaces are available to provide opportunities for students to display their work, for the historians to curate shows, and for art education students to display their own and student work.
Located in the heart of Northeast Ohio, the university is surrounded by cultural resources: Cleveland is a mere 35 minutes away, Akron only 15 minutes to the west, Youngstown is forty-five minutes to the east, and the cities of Pittsburgh, Columbus, Toledo and Detroit offer further visual arts resources for easy day-trips.
