The catalogue for "TEXTURES: the history and art of Black hair," an upcoming exhibition at the Kent State University Museum, is a co-winner of the Outstanding Exhibition (Thematic) Catalogue of the Midwest Art History Society (MAHS) Award for Outstanding Catalogues for 2020.  The exhibition is organized by co-curators Dr. Joseph L. Underwood, assistant professor of art history at the School of Art, and Dr. Tameka Ellington, associate professor at the School of Fashion at Kent State.

It was an unanimous decision of the Outstanding Catalogue Committee to present this award to the Kent State University Museum, along with co-winner the St. Louis Art Museum. The catalogue was judged on the basis of scholarly contributions to the field and the quality of writing and design. The award was announced at the Midwest Art History Society 2021 Virtual Conference and annual business meeting on Saturday, March 20, 2021. It was also announced on the MAHS website and newsletter.

The "TEXTURES" exhibition synthesizes research in history, fashion, art, and visual culture to reassess the “hair story” of peoples of African descent. "TEXTURES" will be on view Friday, September 10, 2021 - Sunday, August 7, 2022 in the KSU Museum’s Broadbent Gallery, located in Rockwell Hall.

To purchase the award-winning catalogue through the KSU Museum Store please order here. If you would like to learn more about the creation and concept of the exhibition, the co-curators were recently interviewed on the Connecticut NPR show "Disrupted."
