Master of Arts in Teaching: Secondary Education
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Secondary Education at Kent State University is a graduate-level program that prepares teacher candidates for initial licensure in Ohio and many other states.
The program accepts candidates interested in teaching Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies in grades 7-12. Additionally, the program prepares multi-age teachers (PK-12) in Art1, Dance, World Languages, Music, and Physical Education. This program offers two tracks: One is an accelerated one-year program, and the other is a part-time two-year program2. Both are partially online. The MAT program is offered to recent bachelor and graduate degree holders, as well as career-changing professionals who now desire to become teachers.
The MAT program coursework begins in summer only. The annual application deadline is January 15th. The first step in the process to determine eligibility for the program is to request a content evaluation. To request an evaluation, please complete the Content Evaluation Request form and you will be added to the workflow for a transcript evaluation. Please be aware that due to the high demand of transcript evaluation requests, it may take 2-3 weeks (upon receipt of transcripts) for the Academic Program Director (Erin Harwood) to complete and return a content evaluation to you. 1 Note: Due to the popularity of the MAT Visual Arts Education program and the sequential nature of the undergraduate pre-MAT art education courses, the School of Art has a limited number of spaces for pre-MAT candidates beginning each fall. Candidates with a completed content evaluation of prior art coursework have until May 10 each year to confirm interest with the School of Art, apply for admission or re-enroll as a post-undergraduate non-degree seeking student, and register for pre-MAT art coursework for the following fall term. After May 10, students will only be able to register if space is available.
2Note: The final two semesters of the two-year MAT require availability during daytime school hours.
