Researchers Find Bacterium on Ohio Beaches That Causes Staph Infections

If you go for a swim at some Ohio public beaches, you might want to rise off the lake water and sand before you leave. Researchers at Kent State University found that almost half of the water and sand samples that they collected from along Lake Erie and some other inland lakes tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus.

Associate Professor Tara Smith, Ph.D., from Kent State’s College of Public Health, and Dipendra Thapaliya, a research associate, conducted and presented their study at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology.

To learn more about the study and why researchers believe Staphylococcus aureus rises in the summer, read the article on PM360.com.
