Cultural Café

KSU International Students Offer an Inside Look at Their Home Cultures at Cultural Cafés

To foster multicultural diversity and awareness on campus, International Student and Scholar Services at the Office of Global Education sponsors a series of Cultural Cafés each semester. Each month, students, faculty, and staff are invited to the informal and free Café that seeks to educate and familiarize them about the countries and cultures present within the KSU community. During each Cultural Café, presenters from different cultures give a short presentation. The presentations can include photographs and feature information about traditions and culture, government, history, geography, and food. In addition, the presenting students often include demonstrations of traditional songs or dances, while actively encouraging audience participation.

Perhaps the most attractive and interesting feature of the Cultural Cafés are the traditional food dishes from the presenting cultures, which Café guests can enjoy during the intermission between the two presentations. The student presenters provide the ethnic recipes for the dishes to University Dining Services, which then prepares the food. University Dining Services prides themselves in preparing and presenting the food in an authentic manner, so the presenters can offer attendees a “true taste of home.” Because each entree and dessert is traditional to the presenters' native culture, it can be unusual for American palates, although there is always good reviews.

Showcase your culture at a Cultural Café!

The Office of Global Education is currently scheduling cultural cafes for the 2022 Spring Semester. Would you like to showcase your culture?

How do Cultural Cafés work?

Any member of the KSU community can sign up to showcase their culture. Presentations are diverse and can include history, highlights, and information about interesting people, places, or things. They can include music, dance, games, discussion, and more--it's up to you!

Did we mention that there is food? Our Cultural Café coordinator will work with you and University Dining Services to prepare two traditional foods enjoyed by members of your culture.

Are you interested in presenting or learning more? Contact International Student and Scholar Services by either phone or email.

We look forward to hearing from you!
