Course Name: ARTS 45089/55089 International Experience: Studio Art
Description: A Kent State Faculty-led study abroad experience in studio art that integrates traditional classroom learning with experiential activities and site visits outside the United States.
Drawing: Reimagining Grid Structures in Florence
Students will study and examine Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise, one of three sets of bronze doors that grace the Baptistery of San Giovanni located in the heart of Florence. The doors consist of ten bronze panels arranged within a grid structure, that depict a series of Biblical stories.
Created at the start of the Italian Renaissance in Florence, the Gates of Paradise is considered one of the earliest examples of linear perspective. Students will reconfigure its formal elements using grid structures as practiced by modern and contemporary artists. Employing techniques such as drawing, mixed media, collage, and photo transfer processes, students will create artworks reflective of their experience researching the Gates of Paradise and surrounding landmarks.
