Orientation

All program participants will be provided with a comprehensive Pre-Departure Orientation (non-KSU students will be emailed the presentation). In addition, participants will receive a thorough On-Site Orientation upon arrival in Geneva. Main topics to be covered in the orientation sessions include:

The Campus

The Kent State Geneva program is housed on our partner university's campus, Webster University-Geneva. The campus boasts a vibrant and international scene with over 600 students from over 90 countries and faculty representing 25 nations. From your first day on campus, you will find that there is personalized attention to students, with small classes and direct interaction with professors. Our academic facilities are modern, attractive and well-equipped. While study abroad students will reside in our off-campus housing facility, Les Berges du Rhone, we have a cafeteria, fitness room, study rooms, and other excellent recreational facilities all located on campus.

Kent State Geneva’s location will add further dimensions to your education. Geneva is home to the United Nations and other major international organizations, numerous multi-national corporations and a vibrant financial and trading center. These organizations and other cultural institutions can provide you with additional opportunities to augment your learning outside the classroom.

Accommodation

As a participant in the KSU Geneva program, you will stay in the Les Berges du Rhône housing facility, located in the center of Geneva on the banks of the Rhone River. The Les Berges du Rhone residence facility houses 118 students in double or single rooms -subject to availability. All units are fully furnished and include linens, a small bathroom towel, cutlery and cooking utensils, study table, and other amenities. 

You will be responsible for purchasing your own food while abroad and may certainly visit the on-campus cafeteria (operated by a French chef!). While single rooms are sometimes available, they must be requested early and will be subject to an elevated housing fee. Students with disabilities and other relevant circumstances will be granted available singles before all others. Traditionally, all students will be placed in a double suite with one roommate.

Flight

Students will provide information regarding their preferred airport of departure and return, and their flight arrangements will be booked by the travel arrangement provider through Webster University. Furthermore, all students accepted to the program are eligible for the $1,000 WINS Travel Scholarship which will be applied toward the overall round-trip cost of airfare.

Study Tours and Social Activities

In addition to the group excursion provided during the orientation week, students have the opportunity to engage in a host of activities and campus clubs. Whether you are interested in something cultural, athletic, or artistic- there's something for everyone!

Traveling While Abroad

Geneva is strategically located in the heart of Europe and serves as an excellent travel starting point to other European destinations. Academic coursework typically occurs Monday through Thursday, and therefore it is possible for students to travel independently on the weekends. It is the responsibility of the student to speak with their professors and internship coordinator (if applicable) regarding any missed class times/internship hours and receive approval and guidance.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

It is possible to use financial aid on this program. Students are encouraged to search for available study abroad scholarships and apply when qualified. Education Abroad provides information about using federal financial aid and searching for scholarships.

Kent State University has a long history of collaborating internationally. Our partners include universities, institutions of higher education, secondary schools, governmental agencies, non-governmental agencies, and private sector companies.

The most successful and active partnerships typically are a result of one or two committed faculty members from each institution who coordinate and promote the collaboration among their peers and students. The International Partnerships Division is here to assist with the development of any formal documentation of the relationship such as a Memorandum of Agreement or contract. About the Florence Program

Kent State University has been educating students in Florence for more than 50 years. From architecture to fashion to hospitality management, Kent State Florence is a comprehensive academic and cultural program. In addition to completing a full course load, students have many opportunities to get acquainted with Florence and Italy during their time studying abroad. Open to all attending students are numerous activities introducing Italian life and culture.

The new home to the program is the Palazzo Vettori, which is a prestigious and ancient building located in the heart of Florence, at the corner of Via Cavour and Via Alfani, next to Piazza del Duomo. The fabric of the building started at the beginning of the 15th century and its façade proclaims the new ideas of Renaissance architecture based on the use of rustication.

  • Comprehensive orientations before you leave the States and when you arrive in Italy prepare you for life in Florence. Our staff is there to get you settled and is available all semester to help with everything from a medical emergency to a restaurant recommendation. Our faculty provide an outstanding education in the classroom and out, capitalizing on the Florentine setting with city walks, museum visits, and field trips.
  • Instruction is in English, and Kent State Florence offers a wide selection of courses in various subject areas, along with all levels of Italian language. If you’re not a Kent State student, it’s easy to enroll as a guest, and a transcript will automatically be sent to your home university.

No one who studies abroad can be unchanged by the experience. It is truly transformative. Expect to return home more independent and confident, with improved problem-solving and leadership skills. Students who study abroad learn about themselves as they learn about the world. Many find new directions and passions, and form lifelong friendships. They are empowered by accomplishments large and small, from a brief Italian conversation with a shopkeeper to picking the perfect plane/train/bus/taxi combination to get to the Eiffel Tower.

Study abroad gives you an edge in the job hunt. It distinguishes you as adventurous, creative, flexible and adaptable – all traits employers look for. A recent study found that students who studied abroad landed jobs in their fields sooner and earned higher starting salaries than students who did not. Effective communication across cultures has become critical in all professions, and your background in this area will set you apart.
