Overview

Located in Tokyo, one of the world's largest cities, Rikkyo University offers students an incredible opportunity to become fully immersed in Japanese language and culture. Participants are expected to have prior knowledge of the Japanese language, as all language classes are taught in Japanese. Placement into the Rikkyo University exchange program can be competitive, with a maximum of two students selected to attend for an entire Academic Year and two students selected to attend for a Spring semester only each year.

Location

The picturesque Rikkyo University Ikebukuro Campus is located in the heart of Tokyo, with easy access to public transit.

Academics

The exchange program with Rikkyo University is designed for students to practice Japanese language skills and to learn more about Japanese culture, history, and society. While students from any major may participate in this program, preference is first given to those who are pursuing the Japanese minor.

Course offerings may include the following:

  • Japanese Language (mandatory)
  • Seminar on Japanese Language and Culture
  • Modern Japanese History
  • Japanese Society
  • Tokyo Studies
  • ...and more!

Upon arrival at Rikkyo University, students will complete a placement exam to determine at which level of Japanese language they will study. The Japanese language courses are offered at eight levels (J1 - J8) and are taught in Japanese. Most special elective courses for exchange students are taught in English. To take major courses in Japanese alongside Rikkyo students, exchange students typically need to test into a high level of Japanese proficiency (J6 or higher).

Living in Tokyo

Students will live in dormitories in various locations around Tokyo, but a manageable distance from the Ikebukoro campus. Dormitories feature single rooms that are furnished with a bed, desk, chair, bookshelf, closet, air conditioner, Wifi, and private bathroom. Some rooms feature kitchenettes, whereas others may have only a mini refrigerator. Some rooms may also have an in-unit washer or television. Bedding rental is available in most dormitories for comforters, pillows, and sheets. Students will need to provide their own towels. Meals plans are available in two of the five dormitory locations.

With 60+ student organizations and 21 men's and women's athletic teams, there are many opportunities to become involved on campus!
