Meet Toqa Hassan, a graduate student orientation (GSO) teaching fellow and doctoral student in the College of Communication and Information, studying family communication and media behaviors among parents and their children. Read on to learn more about her favorite places in Kent, what she enjoys doing in her free time and what advice she has for incoming graduate students.
Where is your hometown?
I consider Akron, Ohio to be my hometown! I’ve lived in Akron for most of my life, although I was born in Egypt.
Why did you decide to come to Kent State?
Kent State, and the College of Communication and Information specifically, had an interdisciplinary program that I saw myself fitting into very well. My master’s degree looked at communicating through culture and fashion, and Kent State had the perfect set of programs for me to expand my research.
What is your favorite place in Kent?
My favorite place in Kent is the Franklin Mills Riveredge Park. It’s right by the river and close to the busiest spots around Kent!
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
The advice I would give to new graduate students is to be open to exploring different research ideas because you never know when a new question will arise that is perfect for your research interests.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy going on walks and hikes around Ohio, as well as any other outdoor activity like gardening and landscaping!
