Meet Nina Kesic, a first-year student in the Master of Fashion Industry Studies (MFIS) Program and recipient of the Graduate Dean's Award for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Please give a short overview of your research, scholarship or creative successes.

My courses this school year have pushed me academically and challenged me to further my research skills. I am currently working on crafting my thesis proposal. I am looking into intellectual property infringement issues in the fashion industry and further investigating the impact on both consumers and designers. I still have a long way to go in refining my topic, but I am definitely passionate about what I have researched so far. I have a great interest in fashion law. It has been rewarding to have the support from faculty and my advisor at Kent State to help me in pursuing my interests through my thesis research process.

Why did you choose to pursue your graduate degree here at Kent State?

In my undergraduate fashion studies, Kent State's Fashion School was often mentioned in the classroom as an example of student leadership in the fashion industry to follow. I made the decision to apply to the MFIS graduate program in early 2020. After I was accepted into the program and offered an assistantship position, I knew that taking the chance to move out to Kent to pursue my graduate degree was the best choice for me and an opportunity to be very grateful for.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to receive the Graduate Dean's Award. Thank you.”

What do you enjoy most about attending Kent State?

I enjoy the fellowship the most. Although I have not been able to meet many of my classmates in person this school year, the tremendous amount of support from classmates and faculty has carried me throughout this difficult year. I always feel very welcomed.

What are your future goals?

My future goals shift from time to time as I try to navigate through my interests and potential career paths. As a long-term goal, I would love to attend a degree program for fashion law and use that knowledge to aid fashion designers and companies on how to protect their intellectual property. I would also like to travel quite a bit in my future career.

What did this award mean to you and how had it aided you?

This award means a great deal to me. Following an incredibly difficult year, this award took a tremendous financial burden off of my shoulders. I felt confident going into this school year that my studies would not be strained by financial stresses.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy practicing photography, trying out different recipes and traveling to new destinations. My favorite place that I've traveled to so far is a tie between Belgrade, Serbia and Florence, Italy.
