Student Spotlight: Rachel Fleischaker

Here at Kent State University’s Division of Graduate Studies, we pride ourselves on the exemplary work of our graduate students. This week, we’re excited to feature Rachael Fleischaker, a doctoral candidate in Kent State’s Music Education program.

Before pursuing graduate coursework, Rachael had an impressive teaching résumé. Over her approximately 26-year teaching career, she has taught undergraduate courses at institutions including Baldwin Wallace University, the College of Wooster, The Ohio State University’s Mansfield campus and right here at Kent State! In addition to adjunct work at various colleges, Rachael has taught elementary general music, band and choir in the Canton City Schools for the past 24 years.

Even though her career so far has been impressive, Rachael has also had quite a few achievements during her time in graduate school. She has received the award for the Kent State University Excellence in Performing Arts Research on two separate occasions and has published her research in the Excellence in Performance Arts Research Journal and the TRIAD. She has also presented at conferences across the country, including the Ohio Music Education Association’s annual professional development conference and the National Association for Music Education conference.

Rachael says that her favorite part about being a Kent State graduate student is the faculty and other students. She feels they have presented her with opportunities and relationships that will last long past her graduation.

When she is not teaching, presenting, researching or serving on a committee, Rachael enjoys spending time with her family – traveling, camping and hiking with them.
