What is Gratitude Graffiti?
Gratitude Graffiti is a practice of purposeful reflection and appreciation. Individuals “take a pause” to reflect on someone or something they are grateful for. They provide a gift to themselves and their community by writing what they are grateful for (on a wall, on a window, in a note, etc..) and adding it to the “Gratitude Graffiti” wall.
Why is Practicing Gratitude So Important?
Over the past decade, hundreds of studies have documented the social, physical, and psychological benefits of practicing gratitude. Even in the midst of adversity, such as coping with a chronic illness, or other crisis, we know that practicing gratitude can:
- Bring us happiness. Practicing gratitude is the most reliable method for increasing happiness and life satisfaction
- Boosts feelings of optimism, joy, pleasure, enthusiasm, and other positive emotions
- Reduces anxiety and depression
- Good for our bodies: Research suggests that it strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, reduces symptoms of illness, and makes us less bothered by aches and pains
- Encourages us to exercise more and take better care of our health
- Helps us to sleep better: If you want to sleep more soundly, count blessings, not sheep
- Makes us more resilient, promotes forgiveness and compassion
- Engages the community and fosters connections and relationship-building within the community
Virtual Gratitude Graffiti
Practicing gratitude is one of the most reliable methods for increasing happiness and life satisfaction. For the sixth consecutive year, Kent State will participate in the Gratitude Graffiti Project, a practice of purposeful reflection and appreciation expressed through interactive art. For the first three years, you likely saw poster boards filled of colorful post-it notes with sentiments of gratitude and window displays reflecting window chalk expressions of thankfulness across all KSU campuses. In 2020, Gratitude Graffiti went virtual, and we continue that this year.
All employees are encouraged to add electronic sticky notes with messages of gratitude to our shared online Gratitude Boards. There will be a new board and prompt each week.

To get started, click on the current week’s link above and read the prompt once the page loads. Then, click on a colored sticky note icon in the top right corner. Type your message and format your sticky. Next, choose a location for your “art”. The Gratitude Board goes beyond what the screen initially displays. Use the grid in the bottom right corner to navigate around the board and view the additions of others. Visit and add to the boards as much as you’d like during the corresponding week.
