Course Name: FR 43091/ FR 53091/ MCLS 40095/ MCLS 50095 French Kiss - Romance in the French Tradition

Description: For many in the Western world, and beyond, France has long been synonymous with romance. Paris is the “city of love.”  Suave and seductive Parisians speak French, i.e. the “language of love.” How did this association come to be? And what is so special about the way the French kiss? Engaging with literary, theoretical, and visual documents, this course will explore conceptions of love and sexuality in France and the Francophone world from the medieval period up to the present day. We will examine how particular notions of courtship and intimacy have evolved throughout time and place and to what extent the French language itself plays a role. The instructor for this course, Dr. Trask Roberts, is a translator and scholar of contemporary French literature. He has spent many years living, studying, and teaching in France and looks forward to sharing his passion with students at this summer’s institute.

Note: All readings will be available in both French and English. Class will be conducted in English. Students registering for FRXXXXX will need prior approval by instructor and will read and complete all assignments in French.
