Kent State Update on Ebola Patient’s Relatives

We would like to provide the university community with additional information regarding the three Kent State University employees who are related to the second nurse diagnosed with Ebola. These three relatives work in administrative areas on the Kent Campus. The three employees are not faculty members. They do not teach in the classroom. Also, none work in dining services, residence halls, custodial positions, recreational services, or health services. They have little or no contact with students.

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, university leaders had face-to-face discussions with those staff members who work in the same administrative areas of the relatives, providing them with the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of Kent State experts, including our director of University Health Services and an infectious disease expert. The staff members were assured that the patient was never on campus. They also were informed of resources who can help them discuss their concerns.

The safety of our Kent State community remains our top priority. The three Kent State employees who had direct contact will remain off campus for a minimum of 21 days. All have self-quarantined and are being monitored by the local health departments. The university medical staff is working closely with public health officials. We will continue to monitor the situation closely to keep our campus community informed and safe.
