Paying It Forward By Giving Back

Each year I receive mountains of solicitations from well-meaning organizations doing wonderful work around the world. Often it is difficult to know who, and what, can benefit from even the smallest donation. Do I help my local animal shelter or radio station? Do I contribute to solving climate change? Do I help the disadvantaged achieve an education? The list is long, but the need is great.

I am a firm believer that since I, as a first-generation student, personally benefitted from donor-sponsored education, that I now should contribute to that same goal. As an undergraduate student, I was able to participate in heavily subsidized study away and study abroad programs as the generosity of the many alumni of my undergraduate institution allowed that to happen.

Every day I am aware of the very pragmatic and immediate needs of many of our students, and it informs much of my day-to-day decision making. It also underscores and confirms my commitment to personal philanthropy.

By investing in the education of our students now, I am really investing in both their futures and mine. By personally supporting the A&S Student Success Fund, I am helping to provide much needed scholarships, and I am also investing in bright and curious minds that will make discoveries and solve world problems. They will collaborate, innovate, and create the next generation of medicine, technology, business ideas and more. Our students are dedicated to learning and eager to take their place as global citizens. However, it is unfortunate that so many of our students must worry about having the financial wherewithal just to stay in school. Today 93% of all KSU students rely on some form of financial aid, and a full 40% of our students are eligible for Pell grants. Philanthropic support allows us to address a wide array of needs for our diverse student body, including ensuring students have access to a Kent State education regardless of their financial situation. Support also helps us provide our students with high-impact experiences, such as study abroad or participating in innovative research experiences.

My paying it forward by giving back to this university is a small price to pay for securing our future and ensuring that the next generation has access to the same opportunities that have enriched our lives and our families. Soon you will receive correspondence from the University about Giving Tuesday, which continues for a full month. I hope you will consider supporting the A&S Student Success Fund and more.

Please join me in paying it forward by giving back.
