Student Spotlight: Abby Hermosilla

Abby Hermosilla HeadshotAbby Hermosilla is a recent graduate of Kent State’s Art History Master’s program. The specific focus that Abby looks at within Art History is Native American art and art equity. When looking back at her art journey, Abby explained that she was fortunate enough to be exposed to art museums from a young age, particularly the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Akron Art Museum.

She also recalled her time as an intern at the Akron Art Museum where they had opened an exhibition featuring artists inspired by video games, including a Skawennati’s series titled TimeTraveller™ (2008 – 2013). Abby explained that this was where she truly fell in love with these specific categories of art. She went on to write her thesis about this affinity for digital/new media art and research interests in decolonial methodologies. She credits her time here at Kent State as being the beginning piece to finding her network and passion in the art industry.

Abby currently works at a prestigious art foundation, Art Bridges, as a Curatorial Assistant. When asked about Abby, her colleagues had the following to say:

“She is a stellar representation of our department and what you can do with an Art History degree!”

Abby hopes to go on to continue her education in the form of a PhD. She also has aspirations to continue teaching, as well as perform curatorial work in a museum.
