Theatre seeking talented high school playwrights and actors

Kent State University at Trumbull's Theatre Program hopes to discover the next generation of great playwrights, actors, and theatrical technicians. The Young Playwrights Festival has been revived for 2023.

"Coming off of the pandemic slowed us down last year," Eric S. Kildow, professor and Theatre Director, said. "We know there are talented youth throughout our local communities and with the festival and scholarships, we hope to encourage them to take advantage."

 Young Playwrights Festival
High school juniors or seniors in Trumbull County, or any neighboring county, are invited to compete in Kent Trumbull Theatre's Young Playwrights Festival next spring. Participating students will submit a 15-20 minute script that theatre professionals and faculty will judge. The top five or six students will produce their plays for local audiences at the Kent Trumbull Theatre on April 21-23 and April 28-30. The deadline for consideration is Feb. 1, 2023. For competition rules, as well as more information, visit www.kent.edu/trumbull/theatre.

Theatre Scholarships
Students who want to continue studying theatre and earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Studies at Kent State Trumbull can compete for theatre scholarships. High school juniors and seniors from Trumbull County, or any neighboring county may submit their application for consideration in any one of three pathways. For the acting pathway, students will submit an audition video of two contrasting monologues. For the playwriting pathway, students will submit a 15-20 minute script (scripts submitted for the Young Playwrights Festival can be counted for this requirement). For the technical theatre pathway, students will present a technical portfolio detailing their work in the theatre. Up to six $2,000 renewable scholarships will be offered.

"We began offering the four-year degree in Theatre Studies a few years ago, and it continues to grow," Kildow said. "These scholarships and the Young Playwrights Festival are great ways to encourage students to follow their dreams."
