Getting Started

Kent State University is committed to keeping our students, faculty, and staff safe and healthy.

All content on this site is specific to the short-term use of distance education technology when teaching in-person classes

Options & Considerations

  • Review options and considerations if you (or a significant number of your students) are ill in Spring 2022, symptomatic due to Covid, or need to quarantine/isolate.

I have a computer, camera, and microphone.
I am familiar with and routinely use Blackboard or Canvas.
I know how to email/message my students.

Blackboard Email. Use the Blackboard Email tool to send emails to your students.
Canvas Inbox. Use the Canvas Inbox to send messages to an entire class or specific students.

Teaching Strategies

I know how to upload class materials (files, links, videos).
I know how to deliver live/online classes using MS Teams or Collaborate Ultra.
I know how to create/grade assignments and exams.
I know how to identify and help students who are struggling.

Be reasonable, flexible and equitable in all aspects of teaching

This includes reasonable accommodation for students when they experience illness, temporary internet connection issues, and other distressing events. Equitable approaches to teaching include such considerations as ensuring that students have an equal opportunity to succeed regardless of the mode of attendance.

Design the course to align with desired outcomes

Support these outcomes with activities that reinforce this learning. These activities may be accomplished through individual or group effort. They may occur synchronously during course time, asynchronously outside of a scheduled time, or by any combination of synchronous and asynchronous methods.

Engagement and interaction are key to learning

This includes student feedback, the interaction between students and the instructor, and active learning approaches.

Focus on meeting the essential learning outcomes of your course

Additional demands place an undue burden on students and instructors alike. Streamlining demands on cognitive resources is particularly important when most, if not all of us, are experiencing significant disruption to most aspects of life.

Stay informed with all campus news and updates

For campus notifications, you and your students should receive official notification through Kent State Advisory Updates. Also, make sure to sign up to receive Flash Alerts, Kent State's official emergency text notification system.

Follow departmental plans

Check with your department for details about expectations for how classes should be conducted. Instructions for handling out-of-classroom settings, such as clinicals or placements in the field, will come from the Chair of your department.

From Academic Affairs

For a summary of policies, procedures, and guidelines for faculty, visit Academic Affairs Response to COVID19.

For Faculty or Students residing out of the country

Your students should be able to access Blackboard from any country. Countries may block some URLs. For instance, YouTube and Facebook are blocked in China, so some of the links in courses might need to be changed. Students should use direct links to Blackboard ( and Flashline to avoid search engine filtering.

  • Cell phone connections sometimes work better than wifi. You might suggest the use of the Blackboard mobile app.
  • Download a VPN to computers before for secure access from abroad.
