Disability Awareness Month

October is Disability Awareness Month!  

SAS and the Equal Access Committee invite you to attend the following events and review these online resources during October’s Disability Awareness Month. The events and resources aim to increase awareness and promote inclusion for people with disabilities. These events highlight the various and wide-ranging abilities of faculty, staff, and students with disabilities.

Week 1 (October 1 - 7)

Accessibility Animals on Campus: A Furry Endeavor

  • How does a guinea pig help with disability? Can I pet my friend's Seeing Eye dog? Do I have to allow an emotional support cat in my class? Come get answers to these questions and more. Making PDFs Accessible with Adobe Acrobat Pro 

Tuesday, October 11
11 a.m. – noon
Virtual Teams Session - 1 BC Hour 

Learn how to review PDFs for accessibility, including how to quickly identify and fix accessibility issues using Adobe Acrobat Pro’s built-in tools, resulting in an accessible PDF. Session includes hands-on practice. Open to students, staff, and faculty. *Adobe Acrobat PRO (subscription), not just Adobe Reader (free), is recommended for the hands-on part of this course. If currently unavailable to you, Acrobat PRO can be purchased and downloaded at software.kent.edu.

Introductory to C2C/OOD and Discussion on Disability Disclosure and Accommodations in Employment

Discuss services and supports offered by Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). Learn how to get connected along with more information on the Ohio College2Careers (C2C) program. The program ensures students with disabilities have the support needed to complete their degree and/or credential, earn higher wages, and meet the demands of tomorrow’s labor market! Learn about reasonable accommodation and the process of disclosing a disability should you choose to do so. Being strategic about disclosing a disability or requesting accommodations can not only help you in the workplace, but also assist in maintaining a good relationship with your employer. You will hear from Kris Wray, Career Development Specialists at Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities along with your C2C Counselor Jessica Vass.

Clothesline Project: T-Shirt Making Session

Join SAS and the Center for Sexual and Relationship Violence Support Services in making T-Shirts as part of The Clothesline Project to raise awareness for those impacted by sexual assault & relationship violence. Materials will be provided. The Clothesline Project is a nationwide exhibit of solidarity for those impacted by power-based personal violence, and to raise awareness about the reality of violence in our society. The purpose of the project is to help with the healing process, empower and support survivors, and educate and raise awareness about sexual assault and relationship violence. 


Accessibility for Webmasters 201: Toolbox and Audit

(required prerequisite: Accessibility for Webmasters 101) 

In this workshop, we’ll use Siteimprove’s Quality Assurance and Accessibility modules to quickly identify, prioritize and fix issues on your website, teach you to audit and remediate your content more effectively, and explore Siteimprove’s built-in reporting tools to help you keep track of the progress you make and share that information with the people who need it.   • Sit down with Career Services to discuss the resources they can provide for SAS students and learn about invisible disabilities and resources available to you on campus! Free coffee and donuts provided! All participants will be entered into a drawing to win a Dunkin Donuts Gift Card.
