So you are in charge of your student organization’s social media presence. That’s awesome!
It’s no secret that when used correctly, social media is a great tool for reaching the people who care about your organization. But, how do you make the most out of those accounts?
Kristan Dolan, the assistant director for marketing in the Center for Student Involvement provides some insight that student organizations can use to up their game on social media and receive even more digital engagement and involvement with their groups!
Dolan suggests that organizations tag @CSIKent on Twitter so that CSI can help promote events. The CSI account works to interact and retweet content on Twitter. This way, the posts are reaching an even wider audience.
Dolan also suggests that organizations develop and plan content ahead of time. This ensures that the content is relevant to the student organization.
Student organizations should use their social accounts to invite students to events, advertise giveaways and highlight what makes them unique. Students follow organization’s accounts as a way to get a deeper look at what the organization is doing. If accounts get too personal, they may lose the interest of students.
CSI does not monitor or control any of the social media accounts belonging to student organizations. According to Dolan, the center does however, offer training and best practices resources for groups to utilize.
Sydney Jordan serves as an assistant director for the Center for Student Involvement, and conducts these trainings with student organizations. Sydney says it is not a full social media workshop, but rather an educational experience about everything that it takes to successfully operate a student organization, marketing included. This is where social media comes into play. She encourages students to think about their content, what platforms they are using and the timing of posting about events.

By creating and utilizing accounts on platforms like Instagram and Twitter, student organizations are able to get their messages out and students are then able to share those messages with their own friends. This is a great way to build up a following and expand your reach on campus! These accounts also offer a great way for students inquiring about your organization to communicate with you directly.
