Communication Studies Student’s Internship Helps Students Learn Outside of the Classroom

A School of Communication Studies student interns with the Office of Experiential Education and Civic Engagement (OEECE) at Kent State University.

Amanda Bevington, a senior interpersonal communication major, is a student intern for the OEECE this spring. During her internship so far, Bevington has been working on various projects, such as recruitment for alternative spring break trips and Super Service Saturdays, developing the first ever global service trip to Nicaragua, and OEECE’s social media.

“All of my communication classes relate to what I am doing in my internship in some way,” Bevington said. “Every day is a different experience in the office so the knowledge from classes has helped incredible amounts.”

The OEECE encourages students to apply concepts and knowledge they learn inside the classroom to real world experiences such as civic involvement and community building. Bevington has been volunteering with OEECE since her freshman year through different service opportunities they provide. Now that she is one of their interns, she loves how she is able to see other students get involved in the service learning experiences.

“It is awesome to see service work open people’s eyes to new perspectives and ideas,” Bevington said.

After graduating this upcoming May, Bevington plans on attending graduate school at Kent State for Higher Education Administration. She hopes to one day work in student affairs on a college campus.

During your search for the perfect internship, Bevington says to find something you love and pursue it.

”Keep an open mind because you never know what you might fall in love with,” Bevington said.
