The College of Podiatric Medicine: Arezzo Clerkship, Italy - Study Abroad in Italy

Eligibility

• Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible. Students must be in good academic standing with no deficiencies while currently enrolled.
• Passage of APMLE Part I for the first time.
• This program does not accept students for placements in the months of August, December, or January.
• If you already have a clerkship or clinical rotation scheduled, you cannot replace/switch it to schedule the Arezzo clerkship.
• Students must not have health-related or other contraindications to international travel.
• Students must have satisfactorily passed a drug test.
• Students must be up to date on all the KSUCPM required healthcare immunizations.
• An interview may also be required by the college administration.

Program Requirements

A student may be removed from the clinical program who does not cooperate with the staff, and/or demonstrates unprofessional or inappropriate behavior, and/or demonstrates unsatisfactory performance, and/or whose health may be a detriment to the functioning of the clinical sites.

• The student may be immediately removed from the premises if that student represents a threat or danger to the staff or quality of medical services or has been convicted of any offense.
• The student must be compliant with the policies and procedures of the institution and follow all instructions of the chief operating officer with regard to regulations and procedures on prevention and safety in the workplace.
• Students must be aware of their obligation to maintain the confidentiality of all patients of the facility, and the processing of any personal data is only allowed in compliance with European and national standards.
• Students must purchase travel insurance. International medical and evacuation insurance will be provided by KSU and billed to the student.
• Students are responsible for transportation costs to and from the facility and while on rotation.
• Students are responsible for food costs while on rotation.
• Students are responsible for all travel, housing, and living expenses.
• Each student must wear the uniform and name badge provided by the facility.
• Lockers will be provided at the hospital.
• Students will not be compensated by the facility for their participation in this clinical experience.
• Students are not employees of the facility and as such are not entitled to the benefits of the employees of the facility.
• Students will be required to maintain a confidential log of their experiences, write an essay describing the experience, complete an evaluation form and provide a case report or similar activity for presentation upon their return to the college.
• The student must submit proof of a negative tuberculosis test in the preceding 12 months. The student must notify the facility of a positive test for infectious or contagious diseases, including tuberculosis hepatitis, or other infectious diseases.
  • If you test positive for TB, you must submit the following within the preceding 12 months. A blood test, Interferon Gamma Release Assay (Quantiferon-TB Gold In-Tube or T-Spot).
    • An IGRA is required for students with a past BCG vaccine who have tested positive with a PPD unless they have a positive IGRA in the past.
    • A chest x-ray is required for positive TB testing (PPD or IGRA).
    • Provide copies of reports for chest x-rays, blood tests, TB treatment statement, and PPD results.
• Ensure that the student is aware of and must submit or provide a background of the toxicology test before entering the clinical program.
• Students will be under direct supervision and direction by facility faculty at all times. Students should not provide care and services to any patient without supervision.
• The facility will provide a written evaluation of the students' performance and experience.
• The director of the facility will provide adequate guidance for students.
• The facility will provide emergency medical care or other healthcare services and its cost will be paid by the student according to the Italian regulation for healthcare in favor of nationals from other states.

Application Process

You will need to complete a Kent State Education Abroad application. These quick steps will help walk you through the process.

1. Start an Education Abroad Application

2. Guest Application (If applicable)

Are you a student at another university? To apply for a Kent State education abroad program, you will first need to apply for admission to Kent State University as a “Guest Student”. Review the Guest Student FAQs page for more information, including application instructions.

3. Wait for Acceptance

Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by an Education Abroad Advisor. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis.

4. Commit to the Program

If you are accepted, you need to log back into your application by going to educationabroad.kent.edu and clicking LOGIN. Once you see the name of your program, you need to click on it and commit (i.e., accept your offer of admission).

Course Description: Students from the College of Podiatric Medicine will participate in a one-month elective clinical clerkship in the Diabetic Foot Clinic at San Donato Hospital in Arezzo, Italy. During these clinical experiences, students will experience first-hand interprofessional education through structured multidisciplinary collaborations.

Arezzo, Italy​​​​​​

Arezzo, a beautiful Italian city located in eastern Tuscany, is very well known for its medieval architecture, its Pierro de la Francesca murals, and the Piazza Grande. It is the home of incredible cathedrals, and it is the perfect city for art lovers. The city is located on a rising hill, and half of it, which is uphill, is historical, and the other half, downhill, is more modern. The students will be able to experience one of the best and most fresh cuisines in the world since anywhere you go it is always easy and affordable to get high-quality food! ​​​​​​​​​​​​

Meals

Meals will be at the expense of the student. If the student selects the Locanda San Pier Piccolo housing option, a light breakfast is included.

Transportation

Flights are included in the estimated program fee and will be at the expense of the student.

Students are responsible for all travel expenses and transportation costs to-and-from the facility and while on rotation.
