Pronoun Syllabus Statement - Full

Pronouns are the parts of speech we use to refer to someone instead of their name, and using the correct pronoun, just like using their correct name or title, is a way to show respect.  At Kent State, everyone has the right to be addressed by the name and personal pronouns that correspond to their gender identity, including gender neutral and neopronouns, for example: they/them/theirs, ze/zir/zirs, etc.  This course acknowledges people of all gender expressions and identities.  If you go by a different name or pronoun than what is on the class roster, please let me know.  Being able to use the correct gender pronouns is important to me, which is why I encourage you to share your pronouns with me and correct me if I make a mistake.  In addition, I expect the same of all students enrolled in this course.  Mistakes in addressing one another may happen, so I encourage an environment of openness to correction and learning.  However, I will not tolerate repeated comments which disrespect or antagonize students who have indicated pronouns or a chosen name.

As of Fall 2022, students can update their name and pronouns within their Flashline (flashline.kent.edu) and Canvas user settings.  If your pronoun set is not available, please let me know.  You may make these changes at any point in the semester.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or reach out to the Financial, Billing and Enrollment Center

As an institution, we have resources that can be found on chosen names and pronouns (kent.edu/lgbtq/chosen-name-pronouns), changing your chosen name in Flashline (kent.edu/lgbtq/how-change-your-chosen-name) as well as further resources on gender inclusivity (kent.edu/lgbtq/trans-ksu) through the LGBTQ+ Center.  Additional information can also be found at mypronouns.org.  Lastly, in an attempt to create a respectful and inclusive campus, Kent State’s Nondiscrimination Policy (5-16.1 & 5-16.2) provides guidelines on the expectations for this classroom as well as the greater university environment.
