The university’s prison education program launched in 2021 to address the challenge of justice impacted individuals leaving Trumbull Correctional Institution to get hired by employers. In January of 2024, our prison education program expanded to Federal Correctional Institution Elkton. By helping justice impacted learners develop an entrepreneurial mindset and providing them with credentials, graduates of the program can start a business, pursue funding for their entrepreneurial efforts, and offer value to local employers. Prison education strengthens individuals, families, and ultimately, communities.
At Trumbull Correctional Institution, we offer the Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies; a completion degree designed for learners with an associate degree or some college-level coursework who wish to begin working toward a bachelor’s degree. The degree allows students to cater their education to fit their needs. Currently, the BTAS is structured to focus on entrepreneurship and business management, communication, and human services, which mirrors their educational interests. At Federal Correctional Institution Elkton, we offer the associate degree in Business Management Technology with a specialization in management and entrepreneurship. This degree prepares learners for a variety of roles in business and technology. Students in both programs earn an entrepreneurship certificate as they pursue their degrees. As the program continues to grow, we will expand our microcredential, certificate and degree offerings.
