Kent State University has awarded the Alan Canfora Activism Scholarship for 2023-2024 to activist and incoming Kent State student Kyndra Irwin of Mount Gilead High School in Mount Gilead, Ohio. The Alan Canfora Activism Scholarship celebrates Canfora’s life, his Kent State experience and the importance of social justice and advocacy to society. On May 4, 1970, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State demonstrators, killing four students and wounding nine, including Canfora. Lillian Kuri has been unanimously elected as the Cleveland Foundation’s 10th president and CEO. The Kent State University alumna, who grew up in Freedom Township in Portage County, will lead the 109-year-old foundation starting Aug. 1, 2023, succeeding retiring Ronn Richard. Currently serving as the Cleveland Foundation’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, Kuri will be the first woman to hold the president and CEO position on a full-time basis. On Tuesday morning, a fire was reported at the University Inn, 540 S. Water St. in Kent. University officials sent out a text message warning residents to stay away from the area. The fire is believed to have broken out on the seventh floor, with two people transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.
