Autism Research is represented by an image of the brain

April’s observance as Autism Awareness Month is coming to a close, but research into the whys and hows of autism is always ongoing at Kent State University. Michael N. Lehman, Ph.D., director of the Brain Health Research Institute at Kent State, said the university supports autism research that focuses on basic discoveries within the brain, as well as applied human research involving students with autism, which makes Kent State’s body of research unique and diverse. On the basic research front is Woo-Yang Kim, Ph.D., who joined Kent State’s faculty in the summer of 2018 as an a...

Nurses are known for their compassion, concern and desire to care for others. The nursing faculty at the Kent State Salem Campus recently demonstrated that compassion and care by delivering food to frontline workers at local healthcare facilities. Dr. Mary Lou Ferranto, professor and coordinator of the BSN nursing program at Kent State Salem, noted that the staff organized an “adopt a hospital” effort and then picked up and delivered a total of 890 pepperoni rolls to various facilities that support the Salem Campus nursing program.  Faculty members delivered 500 pepperoni rolls to Sal...

Most Northeast Ohio residents have at least a passing familiarity with Devo, the visually-driven, post-punk brainchild of Kent State University School of Art alumni Jerry Casale, Bob Lewis and Mark Mothersbaugh. Perhaps less commonly known is the story of exactly how the band came to be. Devo’s creation was inspired and catalyzed by the trauma of the May 4, 1970, shooting of student protesters by the National Guard, for which both Casale and Mothersbaugh, (along with fellow former KSU art student/rock luminary Chrissie Hynde) were present. Two of the victims of the violence (Jeffre...

While locked down in their apartments or family homes, students in the Kent State course Journalism and Documentary are telling a story that future generations and historians will one day discuss: What was college life like when the coronavirus pandemic changed the world?  At the beginning of the semester, students were given an assignment to create shortened versions of their final project, a five to 10-minute documentary, for social media. Herb Page

Former Kent State golf coach Herb Page enjoys retirement while recalling some of his fondest memories at the university. Page, who served 41 years as coach and 47 with the golf program, told the Akron Beacon Journal about his decision to return to Ohio - despite warnings about the COVID-19 pandemic - to support his staff at Windmill Lakes, a golf course he co-owns. According to the Beacon Journal, when Page retired, “Kent State had captured 23 Mid-American Conference titles since 1984 and he’d been named the league’s coach of the year 23 times. His teams went to 28 NCAA regionals, winnin...
