  For hundreds of area residents who attended the 2019 Columbiana County Fair, Kent State Columbiana County had its own way of welcoming them to the annual event. A newly landscaped area and signage helped showcase the work of employees from the Kent State Salem Campus who created the space at the Saltwell Road entrance, near by the bridge. First-year students read May 4 books for the Common Reading Experience.

Before she attended her first class on campus, Kent State University freshman Hayley Simons had already acquired broad knowledge of the May 4, 1970, shootings from her father and brother, who are both graduates of the university. Kent State’s Columbiana County campuses hosted orientation sessions on each of the two campuses to help welcome new and transfer students for the 2019-20 academic year.
