Current regulations state that any university employee who has at least a bachelor’s degree is exempt from tax on the first $5,250 of the tuition fee waiver value each year. Amounts exceeding $5,250 annually are taxable. The employee’s dependents will be taxed on the full value of the tuition fee waiver once they receive a bachelor’s degree...

LaunchNET client profile: Pop Style

Uju is the founder of Pop Style (@_popstyle), an on-campus pop-up thrift shop that allows you to buy, donate and trade clothing for $3, $7, or $10. Customers can donate clothes they don't want anymore but someone else could wear and trade clothes at each price point. Where did you get the idea for your venture? The idea for Pop Style initially originated from the concept of a thrift store fashion show that I created for the first Kent Creativity Festival in 2016. This concept was inspired by my love of thrift shopping and styling, so I wanted to make both available to the community. The ...

More than 100 students, staff, faculty and community members gathered Oct. 29 for a candlelight vigil.

Their hugs were tight, and their words were often soft and tearful.   Still, those who gathered on a windy night on Kent State University’s Risman Plaza on Oct. 29 came together to not only reflect on the recent tragedy in Pittsburgh but to also lift one another up during a time that has shaken many while taking a deep, emotional toll. Many said they just needed to be together on this night. “I definitely had a purpose going into my college career, and Kent State Stark helped me achieve it,” says Kent State graduate Kent Weaver.

Big city dreams. Growing up Mennonite at his family’s Sugarcreek-area farm, Kent Weaver considered Canton a big city. Now this self-described country boy is headed to the state capital. A graduate of Kent State University at Stark, Mr. Weaver said the campus served as a conduit, channeling his sense of purpose that began when he was a child. Caring for the animals on his parents’ farm, he first harnessed his calling. Now, he’s making that dream come true. This fall, Mr. Weaver is attending Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, one of the top veterinary schools in the count...

The Kent State University women’s rugby team found themselves facing a literal bump in the road on their way to a rugby match on Oct. 7. The drive to the match stopped short when the players came upon a large tree that had fallen into the middle of Summit Road. Clyde Gesaman of Ravenna Township stood outside, directing cars around the fallen tree in an attempt to prevent an accident. “I was flagging down cars trying to stop them before they would hit the tree,” Mr. Gesman writes in an email. “Then, a car stopped and two girls got out. They said they were part of a group of cars going to a w...
