Kent State University Biological Sciences Assistant Professor Lauren Kinsman-Costello, Ph.D., confirmed the possibility that increasing amounts of road salt could potentially end up in Ohio’s water supply, but it is very unlikely. Dr. Kinsman-Costello has spent decades studying water patterns in Portage and Cuyahoga counties. “The amount of road salt we’re using is increasing faster than our cities and population are growing,” Dr. Kinsman-Costello told WKYC. “Water can carry that salt into ground water.” It is unlikely to get into Cleveland’s water supply though. “If we’re getting our...

A visitor learns about the events surrounding May 4, 1970 while visiting the May 4 Visitors Center

Kent State University sophomore Phil Morgan said he learned about the May 4, 1970, shootings during a history lesson in middle school that included few details, except the fact that the Ohio National Guard’s presence at a student protest ended in the deaths of four students. Mr. Morgan got a better understanding of this tragic event during his freshman year when he visited Kent State’s May 4 Visitors Center as part of the university’s First Year Experience course. It was then that Mr. Morgan learned details enabling him to add context to his sparse knowledge of the tragedy. “I learned that m...

The work of 153 ecological researchers from 40 countries, including Kent State University Assistant Professor Dave Costello, Ph.D., from the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences, has revealed new findings on the effect of climatic factors on river-based ecosystems. The findings are published in the latest issue of the journal Science Advances. “This is the largest such study, with respect to spatial coverage, and allows us to study carbon cycling in streams at unprecedented global scales,” said Dr. Costello, who serves as second author on this paper. “We are...
