Most of the Kent Campus Buildings in Good Condition, but a Handful Need Attention

POSTED: Sep. 28, 2017

The master planning team completed a comprehensive understanding of the function and condition of buildings.  Building were assessed through three lenses:

  • Facility conditions: The functionality of physical building systems.

  • Academic utilization: How well the building’s classrooms and teaching labs are scheduled.

  • Educational Adequacy: How well the building’s classrooms and teaching labs are outfitted for modern instruction.

The Beauty of the Kent Campus is Characterized by its Open Spaces and Topography

POSTED: Sep. 28, 2017

One of the more striking features of the Kent Campus is its setting.  Stands of mature trees are located throughout campus, with the front campus being the largest and most prominent. Open areas allow for informal recreation, celebration, and protest.  Significant wetlands are east of Loop Road.

While Largely a Pedestrian Campus, Vehicles and Parking Make Walking Difficult in Some Locations

POSTED: Sep. 28, 2017

The Kent Campus is largely a pedestrian campus, despite its linear form.  It’s a mile from the College of Architecture and Environmental Design to Stewart Hall.   The Esplanade helps to unite the south edge of campus and provides excellent wayfinding.  PARTA transit helps connect the campus core to distant parking, Dix Stadium, and the Allerton Sports Complex.

Yet vehicles intrude into the pedestrian environment in two ways. There are multiple conflict points between pedestrians and vehicles, most prominently along the Esplanade.

Runner high fives "Hero"

As thousands of runners raced to the finish line at the Akron Children's Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series on Sept. 23, 2017, Kent State photojournalism students documented the sideline heroes who, at a young age, have won many battles. Akron Children’s Hospital invited the students to cover the “Hero Zones” at the Marathon: Akron Children’s Hospital patients who have overcome an illness, equipped with “press for power” signs so runners could high-five them as they passed by. Canon Professional Services loaned the eight students $33,000 worth of photo gear to document the day. Austin M...
