Clothing Swap
April 4 at 8:00 PM
DI Hub outside room 219
Hosted by a student from Natural Resource Conservation Class
The clothing swap is happening at 8pm on Tuesday, April 4th, in the DI Hub auditorium outside of room 219. Any unwanted clothing at the end will be donated to the women's shelter and salvation army. If you are unable to make it but would still like to participate, or simply would like to drop off your clothing ahead of time, feel free to drop off clothing in Professor Widner’s office located in McGilvrey Hall room 405 the week before any weekday from 9-5. Everyone is welcome.
Essentially, a clothing swap is an event where people bring in unwanted clothing in exchange for another's unwanted clothing. This provides people an opportunity to go shopping for new clothing that they could love, and also give away clothing they no longer need or want. The best part, it's all completely sustainable. No waste occurs, no new clothing is being made, and people still get to shop and clear out their closets. Not only that, but it also provides people who have a mutual love for clothing and sustainability with a social event, an opportunity to make new like-minded friends.

Madeline Sayet is a theater maker whose work is shaped by the idea of Story Medicine - the belief that every story we put into this world has the power to do real world harm or healing. Her most recent project is "Where We Belong," a solo piece about her journey as an Indigenous theatre-maker across geographical and metaphorical borders.

The two-day symposium is free and open to all. Registration will be required, and is not yet open, but will be linked via ESDRI's website. ESDRI is pleased to present this year’s theme: Environmental Justice, Ecology, and Race. The symposium will feature renowned guests and university experts. In addition, there will be many student components, including workshops and a poster presentation.
The 2023 ESDRI Symposium theme, 'Environmental Justice, Ecology, and Race', will call attention to issues concerning structural inequality; disparity and natural processes; climate justice; environmental conflicts and activism; and equitable environmental design. The convergence of the global pandemic, accelerating climate crisis, and social justice movements have re-exposed the breadth of environmental inequalities and the inextricable link between disparity and ecological harm. Addressing issues in our complex, contemporary environment requires expanded conversations that confront latent systems of inequity and support more just social, natural and built systems. Indeed, recent governmental initiatives prioritizing the climate crisis and disadvantaged communities1 understands that “environmental justice is an important part of the struggle”2 in the obligation to improve and maintain clean and healthful environments. In 2021, the United Nations affirmed that a clean and healthy environment is a fundamental human right. Please check the website for all details (existing and future).

A 24-hour inventory of all things biological, and more, that takes place on one of KSU’s lesser-known properties. Come work with an expert and get into the field to use citizen science to inventory and identify a variety of living things, such as insects, fish, terrestrial animals, and avian species. A water quality lab will also be conducted. More events will coincide with this, as we plan to incorporate the arts. Appropriate for all ages and audiences, however, the property is not ADA-accessible.

Hosted by Kent State East Liverpool Earth Day Environmental Justice Conference
The 2023 Kent State East Liverpool Earth Day Environmental Justice Conference will be held April 22 with the theme “Cleaning Up Toxic Waste and Chemical Spills in Our Communities: Corporate and Government Responsibilities.” The conference will be held from noon to 3 p.m. in Purinton Hall, located at 400 E. Fourth St. It is open to the public and there will be an option to join the conference virtually. The event will highlight student research projects presented in written and poster formats that focus on a variety of environmental justice issues. Winners of the competition will be announced at the end of the conference.
- The keynote speaker for the conference is David Emerman, chief of Ohio’s Environmental Protection Agency’s Northeast District Office.
- Dr. Brad Bielski, interim dean and CAO of the East Liverpool Campus, will give an opening address followed by a presentation on the history of the Earth Day Conference.
Students wishing to enter the poster competitions can submit their posters the day of the conference or send them in advance to the Kent State East Liverpool Campus Earth Day Conference, attention Dr. Lydia Rose, 400 E. Fourth St., East Liverpool, Ohio, 43920.

Garlic Mustard Pull: Invasive Plant Removal

The Kent State Farmers' Market provides students with opportunities to learn about the local farming community, select fresh produce and connect with the broader Kent community in addition to creating a community around food with a warm, friendly and fun environment. The market will include selling crafts (photography, prints, glass, fiber). The Kent State Farmers' Market is a perfect example of programming that exposes the university community to nutritious local foods, products, farms and agriculture. The collaborative project aligns perfectly with the mission of the Kent State of Well-being and highlights the eight dimensions of well-being framework promoted on our campus.

In 1970, Earth Day founder U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea for a national teach-in day to focus on the environment. April 22, 1970, was the date selected because it fell between spring break and final exams. In April 1970, Kent State University, along with other colleges and universities across the nation, participated in the national environmental teach-in known as "Earth Day." Kent State hosted a series of events on campus known as "Think Week" in 1970, including having Stewart Udall, former Secretary of Interior, and Ralph Nader, environmental advocate and consumer champion, speak on campus.
