The following list includes style conventions used when writing about Kent State University and not covered in The Associated Press Stylebook.

Geneva campus — acceptable to use when referring to Kent State’s facility in Geneva, Switzerland. Note the lowercase for campus.

Global Education, Office of — formerly Office of International Affairs.  

Golden Flashes — the official name of the Kent State athletic teams, both men’s and women’s teams. For subsequent references, Flashes is acceptable. Lady Flashes is unacceptable. In nonsporting content, a student is a Golden Flash; as a group, we are the Golden Flashes community.

Golden Flashes Club — formerly Blue and Gold Club.

grade point average (GPA) — three separate words; no hyphens. GPA should be set in all caps without periods and is acceptable in all references. Express all grade point averages as the schools and colleges submit them (e.g., 2.0, 2.00).

Green Center — use this form on first reference; center for subsequent references. Roe Green Center for the School of Theatre and Dance is the formal name.

GPS — Graduation Planning System.

healthcare — use this form in medical contexts and for programs and course names in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (effective fall 2019).

Helpdesk — use this form.

Honors College — always capitalize honors when referring to the Kent State University college; however, use lowercase when referring to honors courses or honors students.

Honors Week — always capitalize when referring to the Kent State University event; no apostrophe

ID — see Kent State ID number (Banner ID)

IdeaBase — use this form.

in-residence — hyphenate such constructions as poet-in-residence, ensemble-in-residence, etc. when used as a noun or adjective.

Intercollegiate Athletics — the official nickname of all teams that represent Kent State intercollegiate athletes in varsity competition is the “Golden Flashes.” The official mascot of Kent State’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is the golden eagle. The logos, nicknames and caricature of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics are for the use of Kent State athletics only. Special permission to use the athletics logos, nicknames and caricature by internal university entities may be granted by contacting Intercollegiate Athletics at 330-672-5974. Requests by external entities for trademark licensing of Kent State athletic imagery should be directed to the licensing coordinator, Office of General Counsel, at 330-672-2982.

Kent Core — formerly Liberal Education Requirements (LER).

Kent State Florence — use this form when referring to Kent State’s facility in Florence, Italy.

Kent State ID number  — use this form.

Kent State University Alumni Association — use Kent State University Alumni Association on first reference; alumni association or the association for subsequent references.

Kent State University Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award — use this wording for first reference; Distinguished Teaching Award thereafter.

Kent State University Bookstore — use this form.

Kent State University Esplanade — see Lefton Esplanade.

Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center — use Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center on first reference; hotel on subsequent references.

Kent State University Museum — use Kent State University Museum on first reference; the museum for subsequent references; not fashion museum.

Kent State University Sculpture Walk — use Kent State University Sculpture Walk on first reference; University Sculpture Walk for subsequent references.

Kent State University Twinsburg Academic Center — use Kent State University Twinsburg Academic Center on first reference; Twinsburg Academic Center on subsequent references.

Kent Student Center — use this form; do not use Kent State Student Center
