Asantewa Sunni-Ali

Dr. Asantewa Sunni-Ali currently serves as the director of the Center of Pan-African Culture and assistant professor of Pan-African Studies at Kent State University. Dr. Asantewa Sunni-Ali joined the DPAS July 2016. She has expertise in student engagement and places emphasis on what she considers to be the most vial components of university education, which include exposure to existent discourse, critical thinking and reading/writing proficiency.  She is a scholar-artist whose research interests are centered at the intersection of Black nationalist childhood, every-day and theatrical performance, youth agency, and liberation. Her educational background includes a BA in Africana Studies, an MA in African American Studies, and a PhD in Theatre for Youth. Dr. Sunni-Ali is the author of various publications and plays, including book chapter "'We Are The Scouts, The Nation Building Scouts:' Performing New Afrika in Northeast Georgia," as well as Our Liberated Justice and A Political Prisoner in My Mother’s Womb, two auto-ethnographic plays grounded in embodied memory, perseverance, and resistance. She is currently completing her first book manuscript, Black Power Baby.
