LTC David N. Simms
Biography
LTC Simms is a native of Saint Marys, OH and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Armor through ROTC in 2000 upon graduation from The Ohio State University.
LTC Simms’ first assignment as a commissioned officer was as an M1A1 Tank Platoon Leader, D Co, 1-72 Armor, Camp Casey, South Korea in 2001. Upon return to CONUS, he was assigned as a M1A2 Tank Platoon Leader and Scout Platoon Leader in F Troop, 2/3 ACR, Fort Carson, CO and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM from 2002-2003. After completing the Armor Officer Advanced Course and Combined Arms and Services Staff School, he was assigned as Assistant S3, 6-8 Cavalry at Fort Stewart, GA before assuming command of D Co, 4-64 Armor in Baghdad in 2005, later he commanded HHC, 4-64 Armor again deploying in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
LTC Simms served as Small Group Instructor at the Maneuver Captain’s Career Course at Fort Knox, KY from 2009-2010 and as the Current Operations Officer at US Army Human Resources Command from 2010-2011. Upon graduation from Air Command and Staff College, he was assigned the Executive Officer for 1-24 Infantry, Fort Wainwright, AK from 2012-2014 and as Executive Officer for 1/25 SBCT from 2014-2015. LTC Simms served in the US Army Forces Command G-3/5/7 from May-October 2015 before assuming duties as the Director, J5 for SOCFWD-EA at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. LTC Simms assumed his current duties as Professor of Military Science at Kent State University in July 2017.
LTC Simms Professional Military Education includes Airborne School, the Armor Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and Air Command and Staff College.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with V Device, Bronze Star Medal (2), Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4), Army Achievement Medal (4), Combat Action Badge, and Basic Parachutist Badge.
LTC Simms is a Joint Qualified Officer who holds a BA in History from The Ohio State University, a MS in Criminal Justice from Tiffin University, and a MMAS from the Air Command and Staff College. He is married and has three children.
