Pharmacology

The Kent State University Pharmacology Graduate Program is housed within the School of Biomedical Sciences and enrolls a select group of graduate student interested in research-based careers in pharmacology.

The Master of Science and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences in Pharmacology provides substantial opportunity to conduct research in molecular targeting, drug design, and drug delivery in developing new approaches to treat disease. The multidisciplinary program is a balance of classroom and laboratory work and involves faculty at NEOMED and Kent State University. Strong research foci exist in the areas of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative and blood brain barrier pharmacology. Interdisciplinary approaches to research and theoretical problems are strongly emphasized. Our faculty and facilities are outstanding and provide a first-rate training program for young scientists interested in research careers in this discipline.

Resources

The multi-departmental structure of the Pharmacology program provides an outstanding training environment to pursue research careers in pharmacology under the tutelage of a diverse group of research faculty. This includes access to state-of-the-art resources for studies related to:

  • pharmacologyCell and tissue culture; microscopy and cellular imaging; biochemical, cellular and molecular approaches; electrophysiology; echocardiography and ultrasound imaging, as well as whole animal studies including in vivo animal models of diseases.

Pharmacology Program Admission

Admission to the Pharmacology Program is based on the recommendation of the Pharmacology Committee and approval of the Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences.

The competitive applicant will have a minimum of 3.0 GPA (undergraduate and graduate) and hold a baccalaureate degree that includes coursework in biochemistry and physiology. Exceptions to these criteria are applicants demonstrating exceptional scholarly activity. The applicant is also expected to have completed at least two years of chemistry, one year of mathematics, one year of physics and relevant courses in biology. Three letters of recommendation are required. International applicants must also submit the TOEFL (minimum score of 100) or IELTS (minimum score of 7.0). Additional information concerning the program, its faculty, advisor selection, and development of a research plan can be obtained from the Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences.

The core instruction for all students in the Pharmacology Program is provided in basic physiology and pharmacology. Special attention is placed on additional electives that provide a student with a thorough grounding in areas related to their long-term research and career interests.
