Studio Culture
The CAED promotes a positive and respectful learning environment through the fundamental values of optimism, respect, sharing, engagement and innovation among the members of the student body, faculty, staff and administration. The CAED encourages students and faculty to appreciate these values as guiding principles of professional conduct. Although expectations are high, the CAED recognizes a balanced life and well rounded university education are critical for each student's personal growth.
CAED studios are classroom environments which foster independent and collaborative inquiry, the acquisition of knowledge and management skills, and the establishment of a strong work ethic to enhance students' professional growth. Peer and faculty review within studio stimulates questions, strengthens dialogue, supports critical and creative thought, and promotes the discovery and application of new knowledge. Studio fosters design thinking through research and is a forum for design innovation and exploration with the goal of improving quality of life.
CAED students are entrusted with 24/7 access to studios. Sharing space and facilities necessitates consideration of the studio environment, supporting facilities, equipment, and each other. That includes a respect for times when the facilities are reserved for use by those in the program (do not hold the doors open to the public or admit anyone who is not part of the CAED community after hours), consideration of the shared acoustic space and indoor air quality (if it smells bad – it is bad). Spray painting is not allowed in, on, or immediately adjacent to the JECAED or any other building or hard surface. If necessary, spray painting should be performed outside, on a drop cloth well away from the building, or any hard surfaces. Studio desktops serve many purposes, among them drawing. Cutting, glueing and related modelmaking activities should be done on a cutting mat or on a disposable drop cloth.
CAED studios encourage life-long learning through establishing foundations in design thinking, research habits and the integration of life experiences in the pursuit of excellence in design as we together prepare ourselves to lead in a rapidly changing world that must be shared by this and future generations.
