Eligibility and Fees

Covered sessions, insurance billing, self-pay rates

We are committed to students!

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is committed to bringing accessible and affordable mental health care to our students.  To be eligible for services, you must be an enrolled Kent State student, either undergraduate or graduate, and registered for classes on the Kent campus.

CAPS offers a variety of self-help resources, workshops, and skill series, in addition to various counseling options (i.e., group, individual, couples).  Your first six counseling sessions are covered by student fees, and if a student needs to be seen longer, CAPS can bill a student’s health insurance carrier directly for any services provided by our licensed clinicians.

For sessions beyond the initial six, you may want to check with your health insurance carrier to verify coverage.  The CAPS Insurance Verification Guide can help you with that process.  For any sessions that are billed, payment is expected at the time of service.  Billing is handled by DeWeese Health Center; charges are typically billed to a student’s bursar account unless other arrangements are made.

For students who do not have health insurance, CAPS offers a self-pay rate. Students may also apply for financial care assistance by completing the Care Assistance Program Application (PDF) and returning it to the DeWeese Health Center Billing Office. If you have questions, please contact the Central Billing Office at 330-672-8251. No student will be turned away if they cannot pay for services.

Due to the high demand for our services, we kindly ask that at least 24-hour notice be provided if you are unable to keep an appointment.  A $20 fee will be incurred when a student fails to attend a scheduled appointment or does not provide at least 24-hour notice of a cancellation.  This fee will be billed to the student's bursar account.
