School of Communication Studies Graduate becomes Academic Advisor in the Kent State University Honors College

Ólöf Thórdardóttir, a communication studies graduate, recently joined the Honors College at Kent State University as an academic advisor II. She helps students define and develop their career plans, and she also helps her students with their Honors course work, study aboard, or any individual honors work.

“My favorite part about advising is meeting with students one on one, and getting to know them not only academically but on a more personal level. I really enjoy getting to know my students better.” Thórdardóttir said.

Thórdardóttir earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies in 2011, with a concentration in interpersonal communication. She received her master’s degree in higher education administration and student personnel in 2013 from Kent State University as well. The skill of interpersonal communication is especially helpful for her to communicate with students in person, via email or on the phone.

Her advice to current communication studies students is to do a number of internships in different places. During both her undergraduate and graduate studies, she gained a lot of internship experience.

“Doing an internship can help you decide what you really want to do, and it helps you realize what it would be like when you are actually in that position,” Thórdardóttir said. “Intern and intern in different places, is my number one piece of advice for current students.”
