*Computer Science Department Seeks Chairperson*
Kent State University seeks a forward-thinking leader to chair the Department of Computer Science at Kent State University. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in computer science or a closely related field and possess credentials that merit appointment at the rank of full professor in computer science with tenure, including a distinguished research and academic record.
The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications: a clear vision for the future of a computer science department and its place within the university and region, strong communication and interpersonal skills, proven leadership and/or administrative experience in an academic setting, the ability to help foster and promote a world-class scholarly research environment, the ability to lead and promote the development of excellence in educational practices and programs, and the ability to nurture a collaborative and innovative departmental culture.
The Department of Computer Science has 16 tenure track faculty (half of which have been hired in the past 6 years), 4 non-tenure track faculty, 3 office staff and 3 systems staff on the Kent Campus and 2 tenure tack and 1 non-tenure track faculty on the regional campuses. The faculty are dedicated and are very research active with over $1.8M in annual research awards including two NSF CAREER awards. The Bachelor of Science program is accredited by ABET with over 400 undergraduates enrolled. There are also over 400 students in the master’s programs, and 40 students in the doctoral program. Enrollments have been steadily growing over the past few years.
The duties and expectations of the department chair include the following: actively work with faculty in the department and across the university to achieve excellence in scholarly research, sponsored awards, education, and service; expand interdisciplinary collaborations; demonstrate leadership in recruiting, mentoring, and retaining a diverse and excellent faculty and student body; be an advocate and spokesperson for the department both within the college and university and to external stakeholders including local communities, industries, and state and federal government/agencies; effectively articulate the vision and roadmap of the department to alumni, department advisory board, and other constituencies; encourage strong faculty performance by fostering excellent teaching and stimulating research, scholarly writing, and creative activity; ensure effective departmental processes to maintain ABET accreditation and continuous improvement of program curricula; e valuate faculty and staff performance; and make recommendations for tenure, promotion, and reappointment.

KSU has enrollment of over 33,000 students on 8 campuses in NE Ohio. There are over 25,000 students on the Kent campus. The campus is in the city of Kent, a small lively college town with a vibrant restaurant and entertainment scene. Kent is approximately 45 minutes south of outstanding entertainment, dining, and the arts in downtown Cleveland and 20 minutes from downtown Akron. There is a wide variety of outdoor activities, including an extensive bike path network and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park which is only 20 minutes away.
