Laura J. Newsome, PhD, ACSM-CEP, RCEP, EIM, FCEPA, and president of the Clinical Exercise Physiology Association (CEPA), recently announced that EHHS Health Sciences graduate assistant Brittany Smith, '24, MS, ACSM-CEP, recently won the Early Investigators Award at the Annual CEPA conference in February.
"The review committee noted that there were many great presentations but Brittany's talk, titled, 'Patient-Specific Adaptive Dynamic Cycling is Associated with Improved PD Symptoms,' rose to the top," said Newsome.
You can read Brittany's abstract in the Journal of Clinical Exercise Physiology, or view the entire presentation on YouTube.
“Brittany’s commitment to scholarly dissemination is commendable, as reflected in her being given this award from CEPA," said Exercise Science and Exercise Physiology Professor Angela Ridgel, Ph.D., FACSM. "Her presentations consistently garner positive feedback, underscoring her proficiency in effectively communicating research findings. I am pleased to have her as part of the Motor Control Laboratory research team," added Ridgel, who also serves as associate director of the Brain Health Research Institute.
The annual meeting included innovative topics in clinical exercise physiology geared toward advancing the application of physical activity interventions across clinical populations. These include, but are not limited to, immunological, metabolic, pulmonary, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, renal, and orthopedic disorders.
"I'm very honored to be selected as the recipient of this award," said Smith, a graduate student in the Exercise Physiology program and a native of Buffalo, NY. "This award would not be possible without the incredible mentorship and research experiences that I have gained from Angela Ridgel, Ph.D., and the Kent State University Exercise Physiology graduate program."
Entries for the Early Investigator Award are processed through abstract submissions. To qualify for this award the corresponding abstract author must be no more than five years since completion of their academic degree. Qualifying authors are invited to remotely present a 10-minute slide presentation to the conference award committee the week prior to the annual conference. One presentation is selected as the award winner and will receive $250 from CEPA.
