Academic Standing Policy

Once a year, the Graduate Studies Coordinator reviews the academic standing of all graduate students.

Academic standing requirements for graduate students in the Department of English are more stringent than University requirements. Graduate students who fail to maintain acceptable academic standing are at risk of academic probation and/or dismissal.

For students in coursework, the Department's minimum requirements for acceptable academic standing are as follows:

  • M.A. or M.F.A. students on appointment: minimum 3.25 GPA
  • M.A. or M.F.A. students not on appointment: minimum 3.00 GPA
  • Ph.D. students on appointment: minimum 3.50 GPA
  • Ph.D. students not on appointment: minimum 3.25 GPA

In the case of Ph.D. students who are no longer in coursework, the Graduate Coordinator solicits an annual academic standing recommendation from the student's advisor.

The University academic standing policy for graduate students is part of the graduate catalog.
