THERE'S A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE!

Alison Haynes, co-editor

Hello, Flashes family! I'm so excited to announce that my co-editor, Amanda Feaster, has completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree, with a major in Higher Education Administration. Congratulations, Dr. Feaster!

Dr. Feaster's dissertation, "Faculty Perspectives on Students with Psychological Disabilities", worked to better understand the subjective viewpoints of faculty members toward students with psychological disabilities.

The research results were varied and fascinating, and begin to expose how faculty's mental and emotional framework influences their approaches to students with such unique needs due to the hidden nature of the barriers they experience. To congratulate Dr. Feaster or discuss her findings, you can reach her at afeaster@kent.edu

Everyone deals with stress in their own way, and people with disabilities encounter unique challenges. Due to the varied way stress affects people, the concept of “spoon theory” is often used to shed light on these differences. Spoon theory suggests that people with disabilities have a limited amount of energy (represented by spoons). Since people with disabilities tend to have higher levels of stress caused by the disability itself or the extra challenges faced every day, the way their “spoons” are distributed is different than someone without a disability.
