'It Felt Like Coming Home'

Cesquinn Curtis returned to role in the Division of Student Life with new perspective on value of Kent State community

Cesquinn Curtis is back on familiar ground – the Kent State University campus.

The associate vice president for student life spent seven years at Kent State in various roles serving students in University College and the Division of Student Life before departing for an opportunity with Texas State University for two years. Then, in 2021, an opportunity presented itself for Curtis to return to his current role serving students.

So why come back?

Curtis isn’t alone in returning to Kent State after exploring other life and business options away. In fact, many faculty and staff members do just that.

Kent State Today asked Curtis to share his insights into how leaving Kent State created a new appreciation for being a Golden Flash and what he may have learned along the way.

“Leaving Kent State University initially was a decision driven by the pursuit of acquiring new skills in university advancement and alumni relations at another large comprehensive university in Texas.

However, the time away provided a unique perspective, revealing the true depth of appreciation for all that Kent State University has to offer.

Returning to Kent State was not just a professional choice but a deeply personal one, as it felt like coming home. The commitment to putting students first, fostering a culture of care anchored in respect, compassion and inclusiveness, resonated profoundly.

The university’s core values, coupled with the bold and intentional leadership of President Todd Diacon, became sources of inspiration.

Moreover, the allure of being part of the dream team within the Division of Student Life presented an exciting opportunity to contribute to a community that embodies the essence of Kent State’s excellence.

Additionally, I find intrinsic value in contributing to the growth and success of students, personally and academically, as I am inspired by the university’s commitment to prioritizing students and upholding core values that create a nurturing environment for their development.

I’m truly proud to be a Golden Flash!”
