Furtado has served on numerous boards of trustees in Knoxville, Tennessee. Currently, she serves on the boards of the Cleveland International Film Festival and Hillel at Kent State University. Furtado is married to Kent State’s 13^th President, Todd Diacon, and the couple have a son.

Todd Diacon became Kent State University's 13th president in July 2019. His commitment to college affordability and access has resulted in nationally recognized initiatives to boost student retention, graduation rates and academic achievement.
